what is an audiologist?

According to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), audiologists, who are mostly doctorate level professionals,  participate in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of hearing and balance disorders in individuals of all ages. Their work settings include the following:

  • Clinics
  • Private Practices
  • ENT offices
  • Universities
  • Schools
  • Governments
  • Military


What Does an Audiologist Treat?

 

As specified by AAA, we may treat the following conditions:

  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss
  • Hidden Hearing Loss
  • Non-syndromic Genetic Hearing Loss
  • Syndromic Genetic Hearing Loss
  • Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
  • Auditory Processing Disorders
  • Ototoxicity
  • Symptoms including Tinnitus (ringing in the ear), Vertigo and Dizziness


Treatment & Management Of Hearing Loss & Balance Conditions


Depending on the scenario, audiologists may recommend any of the following:

  • Hearing Aids
  • Assistive Listening & Alerting Devices
  • Cochlear Implants
  • Telephone & Listening Devices
  • Aural Rehabilitation
  • Collaboration with other physicians & physical therapists for dizziness management


The Difference Between Audiologists and Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) Physicians


Our profession may sometimes be confused with that of ENT physicians. We deal with nonmedical management of hearing loss while ENT physicians provide surgical or prescriptive treatment for hearing loss.
